Captains Prize at Portsalon Golf Club.
On Saturday 18th August the members of Portsalon Golf Club will play in the first major golfing event of the year as they contest for D P Logue’s Captains Prize. The event will be staged with an 18 hole stroke competition. Presentation of prize will take place in the clubhouse at 10 p.m. followed by ceol agus craic. Team News
The Portsalon golf club entertained Rosapenna golf club in the return leg on Saturday evening in the return leg of the Donegal Senior League semi final. Going into the match the Rosguill team lead by six matches to one. The result from the first leg proved too much of a hurdle for the Portsalon team and Portsalons quest for glory in this competition came to an end as we only managed to achieve two matches at home. The Captain D P Logue congratulated the Rosapenna team and wished them success in this year’s final He also extended the clubs thanks to all the team members who played during this season’s Senior League campaign.
The Portsalon Minor League team under the direction of John Fitzgerald travelled to Ballybofey on Saturday and came away with a magnificent two matches to Ballybofeys three matches. The return leg takes place on Sunday and the first tee is reserved from 2.30 to 3.30 for this match.
The Barton Cup

The Barton Cup open match play event, first played for in 1899 was again played on the August Bank Holiday this year. Sixty one competitors including ten past winners teed off. The first match which teed off promptly at 8.00am featuring Donald Mac Lochlainn and Barry Roberts.
The golf was very competitive and a significant number of matches went to tie holes. The semi finals was contested by four of the visiting golfers to the area. The final was contested between Patrick Welch (5) from Castlerock and Adam Mc Cabe (18) of Moyola. Patrick won the final on the 18th green sinking a very good putt to do so. He is a first time winner and there has not been a multiple winner since Cathal Toland of Portsalon, won for the second time in 1997. The Club President, Willie Mc Cleary personally congratulated the finalists at the conclusion of the final.
The Club Captains D P Logue and Noreen Mc Conigley were present for the prize giving on Monday evening. Club Captain D P Logue presented the Barton Cup finalists and semi finalists ( David Fanthorpe and Brian Devlin both from Dungannon golf club. He also presented the Mc Menamin Plate to the winner Paddy Mc Groarty (19) with 21points, runner up Andy Boland (13) and Alastair Mc Menamin (12) third. A noteable and sad absentee from the presentations was Danny Clinton who died recently. Danny won the Barton Cup on many occasions and was a great supporter of the event.
The Captain D P Logue thanked the main organizers of the Barton Cup 2012 Cathal Canning and Chris Williams for all their work in both preparations and on the day. He thanked Paid Mc Memanin for his sponsorship of the Mc Memanin Plate.

On Friday 17th August a fun pre Captains Day scramble will be held and all who wish to play are asked to register their names before 5.45 pm to enable a draw to take place. Tee off will be 6.15 p. m. sharp. On Saturday 18th August its D P Logues Captains Day.On Sunday 19th a members competition, On Wednesday 22nd there is an open competition.
Results.
The winner of the open competition staged on Saturday11 th sponsored by Trogen Technologies was Tony Morrison (16) Portsalon 39points BOT Runner Up: Paul Mc Intyre (23) 39points BOT Gross: Bryan Margey (8) Letterkenny 30 pointsThird: Aenous Connaghan (22) 39 points. The CSS was 36 points. On Sunday the winner of the members competition was 5 handicaper John Shields with 37 points, runner up Martin Busch 36 points.
Junior Golf
All junior members should note that the Kernaghan Cup and the Ton Up Cup will be staged at Portsalon Golf Club on Friday 24th August.
Sympathy
The Captain D P Logue and members of Portsalon Golf Club would like to extend their deepest sympathy to the Kerr family on the sudden death of Coleman Kerr. May he rest in peace.
