The prayers were answered. The sun shone. Lady Captains week arrived in a blaze of sun and humidity. The biggest week in our golf calendar started with the Categorised Scramble on Tuesday 7th August. This is designed with beginners and advanced beginners in mind to encourage them to take part in competitions and be a part of Lady Captains Week. The draw for the Lady Captains day followed in the club house and a busier night than normal as people waited eagerly to see who they’re playing partners and tee time would be. Celine Bradley, who loves an early morning start, holds the distinction for which there should be a prize, as being the 1st name pulled for the 4th year in succession.
Thoughts then turned to Thursdays competition, the annual Party and Play in Fancy Dress and this years theme of Dots and Spots had many people thinking of the accolade of Best Dressed and the prestige this brings. The title is worn with pride for the next 12 months and without question the winners chic and stylish design is envied by golfers globally.
The Lady Captains Mixed Competition is the start of the more serious side to the week. The timesheet was fully booked from 3pm such is the popularity of the event. The men were relaxed, the ladies wondering would they play as well on the following day!
Lady Captains Day Sat 11th August started off with the fabulous array of home baked goodies supplied by all the volunteer bakers. Tea and coffee was kept in plentiful supply by Maureen Kelly, Francis Lawler and Mary McFadden to whom we are so appreciative and grateful. Thanks also to everyone who baked and brought all the wonderful home bakes and cakes. Lady Captains husband Noel, daughter Alisha were at hand all day registering golfers, taking photos, handing out goody bags! Not to forget thanks to Maureen Shanahan who skilfully and artistically writes up all the cards in calligraphy style. Paddy Carberry acted as starter for the day ensuring no delays would ensue and gave the last words of encouragement as ladies walked towards the 1st fairway, wondering why the ball did not end up where it was supposed to – ah yes, it was windy. Good to have the answer ready!
No answer was needed for Anne Condon who is the 2012 Winner of Lady Captain Angela Kilgallens Prize with 39 points. A worthy winner who works endlessly and tirelessly on behalf of the club, Anne informed us all in her victory speech that it was the ’brain food’ she has been consuming all week that aided her course management. The recipe was downloaded from the internet and apparently there was also a lesson with Seamus Clinton in the mix too! Ladies then turned their attention to having the best night ever at the Lady Captains Night with dinner, music and dancing, as only the ladies from Letterkenny Golf Club can do in style. Thoughts are already turning to the 2013 Centenary Year!
