A Donegal woman has led out Katie Taylor to receive her historic gold medal this afternoon.
Fiona Hogg , from The Glebe, Letterkenny, simply applied for the honour 18 months ago.
And amazingly she was one of 1,000 people picked out from a lottery of up to 250,000 people for the amazing task.
Fiona’s unique honour was mentioned by RTE presenter Darragh Maloney as Katie came out to a huge roar from the ecstatic Irish crowd.
Fiona, an Occupational Therapist, is the daughter of Mary and Carl Hogg.
Meanwhile thousands of of people across Donegal have gone wild after Katie’s historic win.
Some pubs have even offered free pints to celebrate the Bray woman’s gold medal.
Katie beat Russia’s Sofya Ochigava 10-8 to win Olympic gold for Ireland.
The 26-year-old from Bray, Co Wicklow, came from behind to win the female boxing lightweight final at the ExCeL Arena in London.
The fight was tied at 2-2 after the first round, and Taylor trailed 4-3 after the second.
However, she went on to win the third round 4-2 to lead 7-5, and held on for the win.
It is the first Olympic Games in which women competed inside the boxing ring and her fight attracted intense national and international attention.
Taylor kissed her Olympic gold when it was presented to her in front of a capacity crowd.
Speaking of her victory, she said she had dreamt of this moment so many times before. ”I just can’t believe it. I’d like to thank everyone for their prayers over the last week. I’d like to thank Jesus.”
