RAPHOE LOCAL NOTES
Week ending Friday 3rd August 2012
WELL DONE CHLOE!
The Family Resource Centre would like to congratulate Chloe Magee on her tremendous achievements in the Badminton Women’s Singles Competition in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Following on from her marvellous first game win, a game lasting only 28 minutes, against Hadia Hosny of Egypt Chloe faced stiff opposition against French opponent Pi Hongyan, a former world number 2 and a quarter finalist in the 2008 games held in Beijing in China.
A Letterkenny businessman was visiting the Family Resource Centre on the day Chloe was playing against Pi and remarked that the people of Raphoe must be really proud that a young woman from the town, a small town, was competing in the Olympic Games. That really put it in perspective and maximizes Chloe’s achievement in qualifying for not one but for two successive Olympic Games. Indeed Chloe holds the honour of being the first ever Irish woman to win a badminton match at an Olympics.
Chloe, you have done Raphoe proud, Donegal proud and Ireland proud. Congratulations and well done!

SUMMER PROJECT
The 2 week fun packed summer project hosted jointly by the Family Resource Centre and Springboard came to an end on Friday 27th July. Nearly 200 young people from pre-school age to 17 years of age participated in activities during the 2 weeks. Activities included magic shows, teddy bear’s picnic, and visits to
Barron Top and Lurgybrack Farms, sports day, arts & crafts, cinema days, trips to Bananas in Derry, It’s a Knockout!, nature walk in Gortin Glen, swimming, hockey and nightlining.
Well done to the hard working staff members of the Family Resource Centre and Springboard for organizing and facilitating such a comprehensive programme of activities. Once again, without the support of dedicated volunteers the summer project would not have been the success it was and thanks go to Melissa Laird, Diane Hetherington, Laura Mc Brearty, Emer Martin, Naomi Crawford, and Edel Gibson for giving so much of their time. Sincere thanks also to, Raphoe Hockey Club, St. Eunan’s Terrace, Resident’s Association, Donegal Co. Council, Deele College and Gerard Crawford, and Austin and Bernie Kilpatrick for their support and generosity.
Every year since the Family Resource Centre and Springboard have hosted the summer project funding has been secured from Mr Ronnie Halliday, School Completion Programme Co-ordinator and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Ronnie for his continuing and consistent support for the past 10 years. We know that there are many demands on the budget Ronnie administers, and increasingly so now in the current climate, but he never fails to allocate a generous amount to Raphoe and we are indebted to him for that.
Thanks to all the young people who take part in the summer project-they are excellent ambassadors for their community when they are away on the various trips. We hope to see most of them again when the afterschool programme and youth café recommence in September.
