ULSTER SENIOR LADIES ULSTER CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
DONEGAL 1-08 MONAGHAN 5-25
IN terms of ceding Monaghan entered this Ulster Championship final clash with Donegal at Clones being everybody’s No2 team in the country.
After this display today, Monaghan will be fancies to knock Cork off their perch in this year’s All-Ireland.
The game was all but over in the first 20 minutes as Monaghan raced into a 3-06 to 0-01 lead.
And it got worse for the Donegal ladies as Monaghan won the ball in so many areas of the field.
Geraldine McLaughlin pointed a couple of scores but at half-time Monaghan led 5-13 to 0-04 – a 24 point lead.
Monaghan began the second half where they left off the first, hitting six straight points without reply to lead 5-19 to 0-04 with 15 minutes gone.
And while they added a couple more shortly afterwards, Donegal showed some fighting spirit by hitting a goal and a point to reduce the deficit.
But Monaghan upped the pace again to close out the game 5-25 to 1-08.
It was a great achievement for Donegal to reach this year’s Ulster final, but you have to admit that Monaghan ladies football is simply too far ahead at this stage.
