INVESTIGATORS have launched a probe into why a protected stretch of Co Donegal beach was ploughed earlier this week.
The strand at Murvagh was closed for several hours on Tuesday because an algae bloom had left dead fish there.
But at some stage after that incident an area of around 12,000 square metres was ploughed with an agricultural vehicle.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service has confirmed one of its wildlife rangers has launched an investigation into who ploughed the beach – protected under the EU Habitats Directive.
A spokesman for the service said: “This is a special protected area for birds and is also a special area of conservation.”
