DONEGAL journalist Eugene Maloney will be laid to rest in Fahan later today – with his trademark hat.
The 55-year-old died on June 24 after being attacked in Dublin city centre. A man has been charged with his manslaughter.
Dozens of journalists and friends yesterday attended his funeral Mass at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Dublin.
His brother Sean asked for the Mass in the capital so that his wide circle of colleagues and friends there could pay their last respects.
In his sermon parish priest, Fr Fergus O’Connor spoke of Mr Moloney’s “gentleness, thoughtfulness,….(and) his nieces, nephews and cousins who were particular beneficiaries of his generosity.”
As his remains left the church, the group The Lost Brothers played Bob Dylan’s ‘Forever Young’. Eugene’s nephew Oisin plays in the band.
There was a standing ovation from those at the funeral.
Later today Mr Maloney will be laid to rest at the graveyard of St Mura’s in Fahan. He will be buried alongside his mother Peig who passed away in 2007.
His brother Sean said Eugene will be buried with his trademark hat.
Eugene’s sister Rosin, and his girlfriend Chichi Tran, will be in Donegal today for the service.
