There was much sadness in West Donegal yesterday when one of the county’s longest-serving doctors hung up his stethoscope.
Dr Lochlann McGill has served as a GP across Co Donegal for the past 36 years.
He attended to his last patient at Falcarragh Health Centre on Friday.
And Dr McGill received a huge surprise when staff at the local nursing unit organised a farewell party for the much-loved GP.
The occasion was organised by matron Margaret McClean and attended by many of the staff who have worked with Dr McGill down through the years.
Matron McClean spoke of Dr McGill’s kindness he always showed towards his patients and his courteous manner towards his staff.
Along with Dr McAteer, Dr McGill was instrumental in setting up the community nursing unit in Falcarragh.
Dr McGill, he lined out with Cloughaneely GAA team in his day, said he was now looking forward to practicing his love of the Irish language and spending more time with wife Carmel and his extended family.
He can also get more time to take regular dips in the sea close to his home.
A full retirement function has been planned for Dr McGill in August.
