Day Two of the European Championships in Helsinki proved most successful for Patsy Mc Gonagle’s Irish squad with three athletes advancing to final.
But unfortunately not for his Valley club athlete Tori Pena when she missed out on a final spot early morning by 5 cms – clearing 4.35m but needing as it emerged 4.40m was the Q mark.
Said Patsy: “A solid attempt at opening heights proved no problem and indeed moving up to 4.35 this height on round 3 narrowly hit the bar and it was over.
“She’s just in from US a few days earlier and coping with both the breeze and, for her, cold unfamilar conditions. No excuses from her.”
Now both return at championship end Sunday to Ireland for the national senior champs the following weekend and on to London for Olympic Games.
