Councillor Ciaran Brogan has told Sinn Fein they have no chance of him withdrawing remarks surrounding the election of Cllr Frank McBrearty as Mayor of Donegal.
Sinn Fein Cllr Jack Murray demanded that Cllr Brogan withdraw remarks in which the Letterkenny councillor claimed Fianna Fail would make the council ‘unworkable.’
Cllr Brogan had warned that Fianna Fail would refuse to turn up for vital meetings of the county council.
However Cllr Brogan told Donegaldaily.com that he stood over his remarks.
“I have a message for Fine Gael, Labour, Sinn Fein and the Independents and that is that with power comes responsibility.
“Now they will have all the power they have longed for but they must be responsible for it.
“Fianna Fail were responsible for that power for many years and let us see what this pact brings to Donegal.
“I hope they thought that through when they were electing Cllr McBrearty as the new Mayor of Donegal.
“I made my comments at the council meeting on Monday and I stand over them still.
“I was not saying anything I did not believe and I would make those same statements again if I had to,” he vowed.
Cllr Brogan said he said that although it may have appeared that Cllr McBrearty had the full support of the other parties, he said he knew that support was not unanimous.
“Let us just say that I know that not everyone supported the idea of Cllr McBrearty as being the person to represent Donegal,” he said.
