Shay Given has admitted that Ireland simply weren’t good enough to match the firepower of Spain in last night’s crunch Euro 2012 game.
Ireland are the officially the first team to exit the championships as they cannot catch either Italy or Spain with only two to qualify.
The Lifford man has now conceded seven goals in just two games – a rarity for him.
He said “We simply couldn’t match them. They have a lot of very talented players and all you have to do is to look at their bench to see that.
“There may have been things we could have tried but we were always on the back foot after they got the early goal.
“We still have Italy to play and we can try and salvage some pride in that game.
“We will not give up trying. We owe that to the fans who have been magnificent,” said Shay.
