With less than two weeks to go, the 400 acre home of the inaugural Westport Festival of Music and Performing Arts is about to undergo a huge transformation as the festival build commences, taking the grounds of Westport House from serene rolling meadows to the site of Ireland’s newest international music festival over a few weeks!
A convoy of articulated lorries will bring with them tonnes of scaffolding and staging, miles of cabling, acres of flooring and most importantly, a multitude of portaloos! Lighting towers will be erected, dressing rooms will be built from scratch and more than 300 rubbish bins will be dotted throughout the area. Refrigeration units will be installed (no warm beers in Westport!), BBQ’s will be dug in and stalls will be rolled out in the Taste of Westport Food Village. Bands will arrive by plane, train and automobile, while fans gather in hotel lobbies and local pubs. Westport will run out of sun cream and Castlebar will have to send over emergency supplies!
Kinks-man Ray Davies will be the Lord of the Main Stage on Saturday June 23rd, with The Waterboys, Nick Lowe, The Dubliners, The Walls, Eric Bibb and more performing before him. On the Marquee Stage, Horslips will be holding the fort, with The Undertones, Damien Dempsey, The Minutes, Royseven and many others watching their back! Across the river, Ms. Beth Orton will play the leading lady of the Acoustic Stage, with a wonderful cast including Lloyd Cole, Wallis Bird, Colin Devlin, David Kitt, Rocco DeLuca and many more. Tired music revelers and sleepy small people will head to hotel rooms and tents to re-build their strength for Sunday’s celebration, while festival veterans and unburdened parents gleefully clutching weekend hall passes will step into Westport to hit up the multitude of pubs and clubs ready and waiting with open arms.
The festival faithful will find strong cups of sugary tea and butter dripping rasher sandwiches awaiting them on Sunday June 24th. An army of festival goers march on their tummies! Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and special guests including Soft Cell’s Marc Almond will be heading up the Main Stage for the Sunday installment. Seasick Steve, Imelda May, Alison Moyet, The Chieftains and many more will also be taking on main stage duties that day. Over on the Marquee Stage, music fans will be enjoying the sights and sounds of Macy Gray, Mundy, Tom Baxter, Duke Special and guests and the crowds chilling out at the Acoustic Stage will be enjoying the banter and music of Eddi Reader, The 4 of Us, Briana Corrigan, Katie Kim and a host of Irish and international acoustic acts.
Throughout the weekend, kids will be packing out the Pirate Adventure Park, swinging ships and plunge rides, the Swan pedaloes and the bouncy castles and not forgetting trips on the Westport House Express! The Taste of Westport Food Village, situated near the kids area, will be a gourmet showcase of all that is great about the West – local meats, fresh caught seafood, veggies and fruits picked from nearby grounds, all cooked up and served by the best chefs in the West! And check out all the wonderful nooks and crannies throughout the site, things to make, do and see, a surprise for the senses around every corner!
