It’s around that time of year again, the water temperature is rising and the evenings are long enough, that you can start preparing for the annual Madge Carr Mulroy Bay Swim.
This year’s swim is set for Saturday 4th August 2012 with funds raised going to the RNLI and local charities.
Last year’s swim proved a huge success with increased entries in all wave categories. The event has drawn unexpected but welcome success in its first two year’s and due to the interest so far, the organisers have applied a limit to the entries at 150, therefore anyone interested should get their name down before it’s full.
The challenge itself is unique, fun and well run, ensuring that safety, as always, is paramount and the emergency services will be on hand on the day.
The Mulroy Bay Swim initially was organised in order to fulfil a dream of Englishman Jeremy Mai to swim the bay as he had heard stories about Madge Carr, his wife Olivia’s grandmother, swimming the bay on a regular basis.
He had set the challenge and a committee was formed so that others could join in on the event. The huge interest in the idea was a surprise to all and it has led the event being named after Madge Carr and it’s also led to the event happening for the third time.
“The money raised for such a worthwhile charity is such an added bonus to the success of the event,” says Jeremy Mai.
Many members of the Carr family will be travelling back from various parts of the world to take part, support and fundraise for the event this year.
So again the challenge is set and the organiser’s are ensuring that all those interested get their chance to participate in the 950 metre open water swim challenge. Swimmers young and old, beginners and advanced are all invited to sign up and get swimming.
Talking at the launch Bridget Wilhare said, “The RNLI charity is a very worthy cause and the committee would love to get as many swimmers as we can on board and of course support in helping the swimmers to raise funds for this charity that provides a vital and unique service around our coasts.
“The RNLI is crewed and staffed almost fully by volunteers who regularly put their own lives in danger in the service of those they don’t even know, but who are unlucky enough to need assistance on the water.”
Following the event it’s down to the local Logue’s of Cranford for a great night of ceol agus craic and entertainment will be provided by Paul Ward.
Sponsorship cards are available from Helen Carr, Bridget Wilhare, Kevin Logue, Michelle Duffy Brennan. Call 0861902506 to organise signing up for the event or contact the committee through facebook www.facebook.com/mulroyswim
