That’s the sort of afternoon some people around Termon in County Donegal had on Wednesday afternoon.
Pictured above is well known GAA referee Bernard Trearty looking on in amazement at snow lying on the roadside at the foot of the hill Termon.
Frank McGettigan a local amateur photographer and historian was amazed at the unseasonal weather, as it was never before known to have snowed in June in this area.
So while some people in the county were getting a tan – Rossnowlagh and Bundoran were gorgeous today – the people of Termon were shifting snow and hail off their drives.
Bizarrely it fell in small clumps.
Irish Weather Online, a site run by qualified forecasters, said earlier: ”There was a strong convergence of cold and warm air in the area at the time, producing thunder and lightning and hail, and in this case the the cold air was at lower levels which kept any ice changing back to rain.
“Hence it being mostly a hail shower. Once it accumulates on the ground it produces a “cold shield” which keeps the ice as ice and builds up more and more.”
