The Committee and members of Naomh Colmcille C.L.G would like to offer their deepest sympathies to Our Club President Sean McDaid and his Family, His Wife Monica, Daughters Bernie, Brede, Donna, Noeleen, Shauna, and Veronica; Sons Adian, Anthony, Declan, Gerard, Gregory, Kieran, Oliver, Patsy and William. Sean passed away on Wednesday 31st of May at 90 years of age. Sean was one of the three main founders of the Naomh Colmcille GAA Club at Páirc Colmcille in Newtowncunningham.
“The GAA started in Carrigans in 1980 in John Bryson’s field. The team was made up of local lads and some custom men and guards who were stationed in the area at the time. They came over to Newtown in 1985 and Newtown had a great under-age team which had been going since 1982. The field was officially opened in 1987. Both teams amalgamated and was renamed Naomh Baithin.
The President was Dr. Cannon Cunnea, Chairman was Loe McGurk (senior) and Secretary was Maurice O’Donnell. Art McCloon and Sean McDaid were also involved in the club. Carrigans carried on with the senior team and while Newtown developed the underage teams. In the 1993 season the club changed its name to Naomh Colmcille. In 1995, the club won the league and the Championship and have continued to grow from strength to strength from the beginning of Naomh Colmcille CLG; becoming Group A Junior Champion’s 2010.” ‘Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasail’
