Buncrana GAA Notes For Week Ending Sunday 10th June
Condolences: The club wishes to exted its deepest sympathy to the following club members Angela Deehan on the passing away of her mother Elizabeth Kelly (Carndonagh) and Ciaran and Liam Henderson on the passing away of their mother Sally. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
U12 Blitz: The U12’s headed into the unknown on Saturday with their first involvement in the John Mitchell’s Newry 40 team ‘All Ireland’ blitz. Our aim was to play well and hopefully get a win, however, the boys did far better than that. They played fantastilyc, players and parents can all be proud of the way they played and represented their club. They won the first match against a good Naomh Martin (Louth) team, 1-3 to 0-0, with Matthew Mulholland scoring 1-1. We then had to play Bredagh (Down). This was a toe to toe encounter with Buncrana having the best of it, but having a penalty saved and conceding a scuffed shot as a goal, ended up losing by 2 points with a scoreline of 1-4 to 0-4 (Oran Devlin 0-2). The next match was a must win, against Ballinteer (Dublin) who had won all of their matches so far. We again matched them in a tense low scoring game which they held a narrow lead. Adam Duffy was moved from midfield to full forward, which paid off straight away with his first touch resulting in a goal. The match was 30 seconds from the end when another scuffed shot went into our net and we lost but 1 point. 1-3 to 2-1 (adam duffy 1-1). We were so disappointed after all our good play to lose both matches was heartbreaking. We then picked ourselves up and went and got a victory over Kilcullen (Kildare) in our last game 0-4 to 0-1 (Ciaran Doherty 0-2). The Buncrana lads won two games and lost two games, and oh so close but a great learning experience and a day the boys can look back on and be proud of themselves. Better luck next year.
U12 Football: The U12 Footballers continued their league fixtures with a home game against Convoy. The result was 5-16 to 3-6 to Buncrana, but the home side were made to work all the way by determined Convoy side. However, Buncrana kept playing their game, with some excellent play at the back from captain Aaron Craig, The forwards, with good help from midfield, took some fine scores and posted a high return. The next match is Monday 11th away to Glenfin, bus leaves scarvey at 4.30pm.
U14 Girls Football: Our under 14 girls team participated in the Ulster Feile last weekend in the grounds of St. Malachys, Castledawson. Playing two games, the Buncrana girls registered a win against Mullabrack of Armagh and lost to the host club, St Malachys, who were themselves beaten in the final. The games were 12-a-side and the Buncrana squad of 15 had two members under 12 years of age among its ranks. The standard of football was high and our girls played very well and showed great “Buncrana” pride and determination in their performance. The whole squad of players played their part and will have learned a lot from this experience as well as the coaches. Bring on next years All Ireland Feile which is to be held in Derry.
Furthermore, the under 14 girls continued on their journey in the All County “A” Division on Tuesday night, against a very strong Fanad Gaels side in Scarvey. The girls started off very brightly and were in control of the first half. The Buncrana half back line and midfield were in great form and they continually won ball and fed it into the forward line, where both Aisling Browne and Chloe Grant made great use of their opportunities and took their scores. The Fanad girls must have listened to their “pep talk” at half time as they started by scoring a quick goal. This half was far more competitive than the first and it was nip and tuck for most of the 30 minutes. Lucy Jackson in goal for Buncrana saved a penalty and made other fine saves to keep Buncrana on top. As tiredness crept in and concentration dropped, Fanad stole in for a last minute goal to win the game by 2 points. The final score was Buncrana 4-6 to Fanad 5-5. The scorers for Buncrana were Aisling Browne, Chloe Grant, Emer Clerkin and Catherine Loughrey. Again a great team effort by all the girls and we look forward to their next game against St. Eunan’s.
Senior Football: Buncrana 1-20 Muff 1-9
Buncrana continued their recent run of good form on Friday evening with a victory over local rivals Naomh Padriag Muff, to make it 3 wins in a row for the Scarvey side. Buncrana fielded an unchanged side and got off to a good start with a well taken score by full forward Paul McGonigle. However, Naomh Padriag began to get a hold of the game and enjoyed a good spell of possession, registering 3 scores. Buncrana responded through scores from Ryan Curran, Odhran Doherty and Adrian McColgan. McColgan was causing problems for the Naomh Padraig with his aggressive running from the wing half back position. Further scores were added for Buncrana by Adrian Doherty to give Buncrana a one point lead at the break. HT Buncrana 0-9 Naomh Padraig 1-5
The second half started with Buncrana dominant, spurred on my solid defensive displays by Calvin Jones, Simon McGrory and the Doherty brothers, John and Ronan. Chances were converted by Paul McGonigle, Oisin Doherty and man of the match Adrian Doherty. A somewhat fortunate goal and a further point by Oisin Doherty put further distance between the two sides. Adrian Doherty then scored the point of the game, beating 2 Noamh Padriag defenders and slotting over from 20 yards, allowing Buncrana to run out comfortable winners. The Scarvey club will be happy with the second half performance in particular, however the performance will be slightly overshadowed by the harsh dismissal of Odhran Doherty. Senior Ladies Football: Naomh Padraig 2-7 Buncrana 6-12
Our ladies team travelled to Ture, Muff to take on Naomh Padraig on Friday evening for their rearranged league game. Playing in warm conditions and having to do a bit of restructuring due to injuries and missing players, Buncrana got off to a bit of a slower start then their Muff counterparts who put the first score on the board. The girls, however, didn’t take long to settle into a rhythm and began to control most of the ball. Creating some great movements of play and even better scores.
The duo of Caroline Gallagher and Maria Browne in midfield fought for every ball in the middle of the field, keeping Muffs defence on the back foot, due to some well worked passing plays and forward runs. The central forward pairing of Niamh Connolly and Natasha Craig did well to put the Muff kick-outs under pressure with some good catching, and getting themselves into some fantastic scoring positions. The Buncrana defence, when called upon, did everything right with some great tackling, blocking and pin-point forward passing into their half-forward line. They had to be alert at all times due to the fast breaking speed of Aine Breslin, Megan Grant and Catriona Margey for Muff.
The Buncrana half-back line of Martina Mullan, Catherine McLaughlin and Caroline Duffy kept the pressure off their full-back line because of their determination to be first to every ball and win back possession as quickly as possible. Buncrana, having controlled most of the match, ran out well deserved winners in the end with a scoreline of 6-12 to 2-7.
Gaelic4Girls: Gaelic football for girls under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18’s every Monday night from 7.00pm – 8.30pm in the Scarvey. As always everybody is welcome. Please remember to bring boots, your own water bottle and warm clothing.
U6 FUNdamentals: FUNdamentals for boys and girls aged 5 & 6 years (or turning 5 during 2012) will continue on Fridays at the Scarvey between 6.15pm and 7.00pm. Please could all children be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the session.
U8 Football: U8 Football Training continues every Friday and will now take place at the Scarvey from 6.30pm – 7.30pm. Parents, if your child is interested in having fun whilst learning the basic skills of gaelic football please come down and try it out.
U10 Football: Training continues every Friday at 7.00pm at the Scarvey and new players are always welcome.
Boys U14 Hurling: Boys U14 Hurling training takes place at the Scarvey every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 7.00pm. If you haven’t played before and are interested in playing Hurling please feel free to come along.
Boys U14 Football: Training for the boys U14 team will take place on Monday evening at 5.00pm.New and returnig players are always welcome.
Boys U14 & U18 Hurling: Hurling training for boys aged 14 to 18 years takes place every Saturday at the Scarvey at 3.00pm-5.00pm. New players are always welcome.
U8 and U10 Hurling: Hurling training for children under 8 and under 10 years takes place each Sunday at 11.00am. If your child would like to learn the basic skills of hurling in a safe and fun environment please come down and try it out, new players are always welcome.
