LOCAL people have described as a “miracle” an incident in the early hours of this morning in which four teenagers escaped from a car which crashed into a river.

Our picture shows the vehicle under water in the Cockhill area of Buncrana.

The car went off the road through a field and backwards over a 40 to 50 foot drop into the river.

You can still see the headlights still on in the car which was fully covered in the river.

“There were four people on board who somehow managed to escape from the car in the river,” said one local man.

Three fire crews and two ambulances attended the scene. One teenager was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

Gardai in Buncrana are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. The driver and passengers were treated at the scene before one was taken to hospital.

“It’s a miracle that no-one was killed,” said another local.

A Garda spokesperson said: “The collison was a single vehicle collision that occurred at Tullyavan at approx 00.10hrs.

“There were three males and one female on board, ranging in age
from 16yrs to 19 yrs. One male went to hospital with minor injuries.”
