The Malin Head Coastguard Radio Station is to be left unmanned for the next two weeks as the station upgrades its services.
However the public have been reassured that the vital service provided by the coastguard for Inishowen and further afield will be maintained.
Donegal Daily has learned that officers from the station have been sent to Dublin for training on the new system.
However emergency calls to the centre will be re-routed to Dublin and the same staff will monitor calls.
Deputy Joe McHugh, who raised the issue of the retention of coastguard stations in the past, said he welcomed the upgrade from analogue to digital.
He added that the volunteer network amongst the coastguard and rescue service in Co Donegal was among the best in the country.
