Gaeltacht League
On Saturday last Portsalon golf club contested for the overall prize in this seasons Gaeltacht League final which was staged at Nairn/Portnoo Golf Club. The final was contested between Gweedore, Nairn/Portnoo, Portsalon and Rosapenna golf clubs .On the day the remaining clubs Cloughaneeley, Cruit Island and Dunfanaghy also contested for the captain’s prize and their individual captain’s prizes. Portsalon were paired with neighbours Rosapenna in the final round. The event was individual cards and each team had to nominate twenty four players from which the best ten cards counted towards the overall competition. The Portsalon team were unable to cope with the blustery weather conditions and the tight pin positions and finished in fourth place with 324 points. The overall team winners were Rosapenna who had a clear victory over the contesting teams Over the course of the inter club match play Rosapenna were by far the best team and the result on Saturday was indeed well deserved. The results were as follows; Gaeltacht League winners Rosapenna Golf Club. In the overall individual Captains prizes the winner was Gweedore’s five handicapper Paul Mulligan who won on the break of tie with 40 points, Runner up Portsalon’s Shaun Shields with 40 points, Gross Portsalon’s Eamon Mc Dermott with 34 points and third Portsalon’s Tony Kingston with 39 points. Each club had their own individual captain’s prizes and Barry Keeney was the Portsalon winner runner up Enda Mc Elhinney, Gross John Shields and third Kevin Mc Gonagle. The Portsalon team captain Donal Callaghan would like to congratulate the overall winning team captain Joe Mc Hugh and his Rosapenna team, the organising committee who oversee and run the competition during the year a special thanks to Nairn/Portnoo golf club for their hospitality on the day and to all the Portsalon golf club members who played during this season’s campaign.
Events
On Saturday 28th April there is an open gents competition and on Sunday 29th April a members foursomes competition. On Wednesday 1st May a gents open competition. Donegal Links Classic
The most eagerly awaited team golfing event of the year has been announced for the North West during the week. The Donegal Links Classic which is staged over three of Donegal’s most prestigious links golf courses Ballyliffen, Portsalon and Rosapenna golf courses. The Donegal Links Classic is scheduled to run over three days 4th 5th & 6th June 2012.The Donegal Links Classic is one of the longest running team events in the golfing calendar year and is well worth a visit for anyone interested. The format as in previous years is a team of four (gents or ladies). There is a host of prizes on offer daily team and individual prizes on each of the course on a daily basis and the overall prizes for the three days golfing. The winner of the Wednesday open was Joe Logan (17) 42 points runner up Diarmáid Coll (16) 40 points Gross: John Shields (4) 32 points third Chuck McTaggart (14) 40 points The CSS was 37 points The winner of the Saturday open was Eoin O Neill (12) Strabane 40 points Runner Up: Willie Russell (22) Portsalon 36 points The CSS was 36 points. The winner of the Sunday members competition was Eamon Mc Conigley (8) 40 points, runner up Stephen Connolly (5) 40 points, Gross Eamon Mc Dermott (3) 34 points. The CSS was 37 points.
Match Play
The closing date for this seasons match play singles competition has now past. The competition secretary has now completed the dray for the first round matches. All first round matches must be played by 30th April.
Ulster Fourball
The return leg of the Ulster Fourball was held at Royal Belfast on Sunday last. Portsalon under the direction of Hugh Mc Ginley held a four matches to one match lead following the first leg match, The travelling Portsalon team won on the day by three matches to two matches which left the over match result seven matches to three matches in favour of Prtsalon..
Ulster Cup
The first match in this seasons Ulster Cup was held on Sunday last as John Logue led his team to Silverwood in Lurgan for the first leg match. The travelling Portsalon team came away with two and half matches to Silverwoods four and half matches. The return leg of the Ulster Cup will be staged at Portsalon on Sunday 29th and members should note that the tee will be reserved for this match.
Over 50’s
The Portsalon over 50’s team will have their first run out on Sunday 29th as they travel to Bundoran golf club for their first round first leg match.
J B Carr
The over 60’s under the captaincy of John Strain had a short venture into this seasons J B Carr competition. Portsalon entertained Ballybofey golf club on Tuesday last. The Portsalon team were defeated by a very strong Ballybofey team.
Mixed Foursomes
The team captain of this season’s mixed foursomes has arranged competitions each Friday evening at 6.30.
