Sinn Fein TDs, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn and Pearse Doherty have confirmed that former Regional Development Minister in the Six County Executive, Conor Murphy MP, will address an information evening in Letterkenny to explain his approach to water charges and infrastructure during his term in office.
In a joint statement the Donegal TDs said: “The government is planning to introduce water charges to every home in this state by 2014.
“Sinn Féin believes that this is wrong. We believe that the provision of water should be paid for from a general, fair and progressive taxation system.
“In the last term of the Northern Assembly, Conor Murphy had responsibility for the provision of water in the Six Counties. At that time he was directed by the British Government to introduce water charges. A similar scenario is now happening to our government who has been directed by Brussels to introduce water charges.
“The difference is that Conor Murphy refused to do so and instead, he invested in upgrading the water & sewerage system and created jobs.
“Much can be learned from the approach taken by Conor Murphy.
“As such, we would invite anyone who is opposed to the introduction of water charges, anyone who intends to join the campaign against them or anyone who would like to know more about our alternative to come along to Gallagher’s Hotel on 4th May at 7pm and join in the discussion.”
