It’s not so long ago that people in Letterkenny nevermind the rest of the country had heard about BEO.
Now the competition which has its roots at Colasite Ailigh has gone nationwide.
The National BEO Competition Final approaches on 11th May at the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny with a glitterati of whose who judging the final.
The competition involves students organising a series of live music gigs and social workshops in their area.
The ultimate aim of BEO is to promote local music but also to encourage the use of a cupla focal during the events.
This year’s event has seen the competition go nationwide with other schools across the country competing to take up the mantle left off by the likes of Colaiste Ailigh, St Eunan’s College and Loreto Convent.
And there is certainly no doubting the pedigree of personnel on board for this year’s event.
The name Jackie Hayden is synonymous with Irish rock music for the past four decades.
The talent spotter, who is also a critic and director of the Hot Press music magazine, is also the man who first spotted and signed a young band called U2.
Other judges on the night include Paddy McKenna of 2FM who will also perform along with his band Storyfold as well as The Dirty 9s and Jamaican Vampires.
The competition would not have been possible without the sponsorship from Donegal County Council and the VEC and not least the tremendous support shown to BEO by the Principals and Transition Year Co-Ordinators of Coláiste Ailigh, The Loreto Convent and St. Eunans College.
More details of hat promises to be a terrific night for all ages will be carried in the coming days and weeks.
