Senior Men Football: Buncrana Senior Men Footballers were in action at the Scarvey in the Donegal All-County league on Sunday afternoon, against division 3 rivals Aodh Ruadh Ballyshannon. The management team of Mark Crossan and Brendan McGee asked for the team to bounce back from a disappointing 1 point defeat last week against Naomh Columba, and the team delivered. In the early stages of the first half Buncrana dominated the play, with Oisín Doherty opening the scoring following good build-up play by midfielder Garbhan Friel. Aodh Ruadh were finding scores hard to come by with solid marking in the full back line from Calvin Jones, Simon McGrory and Ronan Doherty. As the half progressed Aodh Ruadh managed to create some chances, however some wayward shooting by the visiting forwards, and further scores from Oisín Doherty, Odhran Doherty and Garbhan Friel led to Buncrana finishing the first half with a 2 point lead.
Aodh Ruadh began the second half well and decreased the home side’s lead to 1 point. However Buncrana responded, with the strong forward runs from the experienced half back Adrian McColgan, and Odhran Doherty from midfield. Once again Buncrana dominated possession and it wasn’t long before the ball found it’s way into the visitors net, leaving Buncrana with a 4 point lead with 5 minutes remaining. Through hard work, and despite a late goal by Aodh Ruadh, Buncrana manage to see out the game and win by a 2 point margin. The Scarvey men will now be aiming to pick up where they left off next weekend against St. Nauls.
Senior Reserves
A great team performance by Buncrana who overcame Ballshannon by a point in the Scarvey. A neat finish by the hardworking Buncrana midfielder Stephen Nelson proved to be a very important score, before the fullback Stephen Doherty scored the wining point with two minutes remaining. Outstanding for the home side were Ryan Curran, Bruce Waldron, John Cassidy And Paul McGonigle. Scorers: Paul McGonigle 0-2, Ryan Curran 0-3, John Cassidy 0-1, Gareth Porter 0-2 Stephen Doherty 0-1, Stephen Nelson 1-0. Half Time 0-5 to 1-2 Full Time 1-9 to 1-8
Senior Ladies Football: The Buncrana Senior Ladies team travelled to Lifford on Sunday morning for their second league match of the season. The strong, seasoned outfit of Naomh Padraig Lifford, with the home advantage, took control of the match in the first half. The Lifford crew used the advantage of their experience to control a lot of the play in the opening half with some excellent runs and overlapping plays. However, the over used term of ‘a game of two halves’ certainly must be used to describe this match. The Buncrana team took on a new spirit in the second half, only allowing Lifford to put 2 points on the board for the entire 30 minutes, with an excellent display in defence from Martina Mullan keeping Lifford at bay. So onward and upward now for the senior ladies team in their first league challenge for the club. Training continues on; Wednesday from 7.15pm and Friday from 8pm.
