Jazz fans across the north west are gearing up for the 2012 City of
Derry Jazz festival which will be held over the May Bank holiday
weekend.
Tickets are selling well for Van Morrison and Ruby Turner and with 300
artists signed up, there’s something for everyone.
Letterkenny-based Mirenda Rosenberg is also set to play at the festival.
Cork songsmith Mick Flannery, who has topped the Irish charts with his
Red to Blue album this week, is another top act at this year’s
festival.

Una McGillion, from Derry City Council, said the festival was growing
year on year.
“We’ve got 70 venues on board this year with over 300 artists,” she said.
“People are so excited. They look forward to it every year. It’s one of the few jazz festivals that actually allows you to play every sort of jazz.
“Neo-soul jazz, blues jazz, funk jazz – you name it and it’s here. It’s brilliant.”
Irish soul sensations, The Stars from the Commitments, will take to the stage of DaVinci’s, to rekindle the music of the nineties promising a belting finale to the festival.
High on the festival agenda is showcasing young local talent and for the first year ever the festival will be taking the music outdoors to Guildhall Square where students from the University of Ulster’s Big Band, Foyle College’s Jazz Band, St Cecilia’s College, the Donegal School of Music Band and Limavady Grammar School Jazz Band will be performing their own eclectic range of music and create a real buzz and atmosphere in the city centre.
Well-known British actress Rebecca Grant of Holby City fame and star of the West End hit “Bombay Nights” will join festival favorites the Jive Aces for a series of performances throughout the festival while festival regular Ronnie Greer and his powerhouse band will be joined on stage by special guest Grainne Duffy, who will also be performing a solo gig, has been hailed one of the top up and coming Irish jazz performers. Expect a night of blues, roots and jazz based music played with style and conviction by the best in the business.
The festival runs from Wednesday 2 May until Monday 7 May.
