The people of Co Donegal are to officially honour the memory of Garda Gary McLoughlin, who was killed in the line of duty.
Garda McLoughlin, 24, was killed when he was struck by a car being driven by Martin McDermott at Burt in 2009.
McDermott hit the headlines recently when he escaped from prison and went on the run to be captured in Derry.
Now Donegal County Council is to hold a special reception at County House in Lifford on May 4th next.
It is expected that all of the late Garda’s family form Co Leitrim will attend the ceremony.
It follows a motion by Cllr Jack Murray last July calling for a proper memorial service for Garda McLaughlin.
Cllr Murray said today “The death of a young man who was working to serve and protect the people of Donegal shocked everyone in the county.
“It is fitting that we pay tribute to him and his family as was done previously after the death of Garda Robbie McCallion in Letterkenny.”
