SEAMUS Coleman is facing a battle with several other players to secure a spot in the Euro 2012 Irish squad, according to reports.
The Killybegs man and Everton midfielder is up against Derry man James McClean as well as James McCarthy and Paul Green, the Irish Independent reports.
“I have two or three decisions to make,” said Giovanni Trapattoni in an interview with the paper.
“McCarthy, Coleman, players like that. I have to make a decision. And I do not forget them for the next campaign, for the World Cup. But we have to decide the best for now.”
The interview with assistant Marco Tardelli appears to show a u-turn by management who had previously stated they would stick with the players who got Ireland through to Poland/Ukraine.
Tardelli said of McClean: “I said that it was important to give a chance to the players who helped us achieve qualification, but I also said it was important to leave one or two spaces for the new group, the next generation, and sure there is a possibility for players like this.”
