The Chilean Ambassador to Ireland visited the County Museum in Letterkenny yesterday to officially open a unique exhibition.
The Ambassador was met by Mayor of Letterkenny, Cllr Gerry McMonagle who also made a presentation on behalf of the town.
“If you get the chance I would recommend calling in. The exhibition depicts major events over this last 25 years,” said Mayor McMonagle.
The unique exhibition features the work of quilt-maker and artist Irene MacWilliam.
Irene, a well-known Northern Ireland artist, will display her Year Quilts spanning the last 26 years in which she has used her quilting skills to portray her concerns about natural and human disasters.
The exhibition will also feature a small collection of Latin American arpilleras from Chile which expose and denounce events that have dramatically shaped the lives of women.
Arpilleras (arr-pee-ai-ahs – stitched appliqué wall hangings that tell a story) became prominent during the 1973-1990 dictatorship as they worked with textiles to tell stories of conflict, struggle and survival.
The exhibition has been brought together by guest curator, Roberta Bacic, a Chilean native living in Northern Ireland.
The exhibition was officially opened by the Chilean Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Leonel Fernando Searle, on what was his first official visit to Donegal yesterday.
