With 31 cards returned at the end of the annual Easter Hamper last Saturday, the day turned out to be the most hotly contested competition of 2012 so far.
In typically changeable weather conditions, members battled the elements to try and safely plot their way around the wee course without dropping shots unnecessarily, and keep their hopes alive of bringing home the big hamper.
On the day it was Shaun Sweeney who came out on top of the field, despite incurring a penalty by marking his ball on the green by hitting it with the putter, not recommended by many professionals on the tour.
Shaun’s excellent 42 pts just about kept him ahead of the chasing trio 1 point back on 41. Martin O’Reilly just held on to second place by a slightly better back nine than Thomas Merrit who took third spot, also on 41.
The third members of the trio on 41 was Patsy Gallagher who took the front nine, with Paddy Lynch taking the home stretch. Brendan Gallagher was the gross winner, with Damian Hannigan narrowly claiming the longest drive, and Shaun Sweeney(yes the same) getting nearest the pin at the difficult first hole.
Congratulations to all the participants on a difficult day, with many strange occurances on the course, including a priest taking money from a taxman !!
Competition continues at Otway this Sunday 15th when members will compete in the annual Otway cup, a single stableford competition, which also counts in the golfer of the year.
