Minor Hurling: The U18 hurlers got their season of to a good start in Hibernian Park Burt on Thursday night with a hard fought win, with a scoreline of 2:9 to 1:7, whilst fielding a very young squad with only 3 of the team overage next year. The game was played in ideal conditions, and swung from end to end. Burt got a couple of early points to run into an early lead, with the Scarvey boys missing several chances early on, but they soon settled and went in at Halftime 2 points in front, thanks to a Dermot Doherty goal. Burt got a goal mid-way through the second half, but a bullet penalty by Jack O’Loughlin eased nerves and the boys sealed it by tagging on some late points. The swift accurate puck outs from keeper Tom Clare were the launch-pad for many Buncrana attacks. Donal Óg Mac Lochlainn (capt.) was a rock at full back and he was ably assisted by young corner backs, Paul Nelson and Darren Doherty (roe). There was many good performances in the middle third of the field, with veteran’s Daniel, Conor, Stephen, Jamie and Michael all playing their part with their involvement with the county minor set-up baring fruit, but here too they were aided by the impressive work of U16 players, Jack and Sam (Roe). In front of goal Dermot Doherty showed glimpse’s of form, and when introduced as sub Kevin Crawford made a welcome return to the squad but both will know that more stick work is needed.
U16 Hurling: On Saturday morning the U16 Hurlers headed to Banagher to play in the U16 9-aside competition. They started brightly against Glen’s of Antrim side Glenshesk, losing only to a late rally from the strong Antrim outfit. Tthey then went on to comfortly beat Banagher and Belfast outfit Pearse’s. A leg injury to Sam Doherty restricted him to netminding duties, whilst injuries to Jack O’Loughlin and Darren Roe left the side weakened going into the last games, where they lost to Armagh side Derrynoose and Antrim side Larne. All in all it was a good day out and our lads were able to play teams they would not normally get a chance to meet.
U14 Hurling: The U14 hurlers had a good win on Thursday night over Burt, with a scoreline of 9-22 to 0-3, in the Scarvey. It was a good team performance by all, whilst Dylan Duffy, Craig Doherty and Oisin Grant were on fire in the half-forward line, Paddy Wilson and Kevin Vaughan were on top in midfield and the half back line of James Doherty, PJ McCarron and Paul Tourish were rock solid – all chipping in with great points. Daniel Deery at corner forward scored 4 goals.
