Donegal Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has received confirmation from the Head of Communications at Eircom that a number of Broadband exchanges across Donegal have been upgraded to the Next Generation Broadband Core Network.
Senator Ó Domhnaill said: “The upgrade works aim to build on top of the National Fibre Network, acting as a highly effective distribution infrastructure which delivers multi-gigabit speeds into local exchanges all over the County.”
“The rollout involves the upgrading of the transmission equipment to DWDM. This then allows the National Fibre Network to deliver an ultra-high-capacity NGN Core Network that’s capable of delivering dedicated gigabit speeds to end-users.”
The Ballyshannon exchange was upgraded in January, with the Creeslough exchange upgraded in February.
A number of exchanges, including Bunbeg, Glenties and Killygordon were upgraded during the month of March and the Castelfin exchange was upgraded last weekend.
“I have now received confirmation that the Dungloe exchange is now on the provisional list to be completed in 2012.”
“These developments make welcome news, however I have raised concerns with Eircom, other providers and the Department of Communications around the optimum roll out of an adequate speed Broadband Service to more Rural Areas of the County.
“While the National Broadband Scheme provided progress in terms of services roll-out the actual service being provided through the NBS Wireless Services can leave a lot to be desired in many areas.”
