Buncrana GAA Notes For Week Ending Sunday 8th February 2012
Senior Men Football: Hard luck to the senior men’s side who lost by a single point away to Carndonagh on Saturday evening in front of a big crowd. Carndonagh got the march on us with two early goals, no doubt helped by the work done to avoid relegation earlier in the year. Our lads put in a great shift and were it not for some early season wayward shooting and a great save from the Carndonagh keeper the result would have been much different. Great spirit and effort was shown though and with room for improvement and fitness in some quarters, all augurs well for the rest of the season.
The reserve side recorded an excellent away victory against a strong Carn side. Great to see Pauric McLaughlin back in a Buncrana jersey, Ryan Curran made his senior debut at corner forward and chipped in with a great goal in the opening minutes. In defence minor player of the year Diarmuid Porter was rock solid at full back ably assisted by another debutant Stephen Doherty. The younger lads like Mark O’Connell and Sean Doherty grew into the game as it went on, and with more lads waiting in wings to get their chance this side can look forward to a successful season. Training continues on Tuesday night at 7.30 and everyone is welcome.
Stay Awake Night: As a Club we are continuously striving to improve the facilities and opportunities for our young people. In order to do this, we must fundraise and we do appreciate your continued support. We are now planning another unique event, a sponsored ‘Stay awake all night’ on Good Friday night in the Scarvey Club House, 9pm till 9am. Our underage players and club members are volunteering to undertake this challenging, yet fun filled, test of endurance in order to raise funds for underage development. Entertainment and refreshments will be provided, as well as prizes for the person with the most sponsorship. Best of luck to everyone involved! ZZZzzz!

To be eligible to join the panel individuals must be male 16+, have a mild-moderate intellectual disability and have transport to and from training (probably fortnightly). Girls U12 Football: The Buncrana under 14 girls began their season with a game at home under the floodlights. It was their first competitive game and their hard work was reflected in the winning score and what was an entertaining game of skill and endurance. It was great to have the return of our County girl, Mary Theresa Doherty who was a great example to her team. She led the girls into a a first half that they very quickly seemed to have control of. The girls from Convoy had a very strong midfield and put some pressure on us, however our defence was not ready to let anyone past them. Lia Gallianagh and Niamh Murphy in particular shone through. The second half seen the visitors have some control, however our high scoring from mainly Chloe Grant, Eimear Clerkin and Catherin Loughrey made it a game of no return. Well done to all the girls, who despite the fact they were well ahead, they continued to work hard and held control right till the end. The girls left the Scarvey very content with their 5-9 to 1-3 win.
Gaelic4Girls: Gaelic football for girls under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18’s every Monday night from 7.00pm – 8.30pm in the Scarvey. As always everybody is welcome. Please remember to bring boots, your own water bottle and warm clothing.
Senior Ladies Gaelic Football: The Buncrana Ladies Senior team played another pre-season warm-up game in The Scarvey on Wednesday night ,against an in-form Malin side. Once again, the experienced Malin side took the lead in the first half, but the youthful Buncrana side did not make it easy for them. The girls are beginning to show the talent and experience they all have as the nerves settle and they begin to form as a team. The second half saw the Buncrana ladies push Malin to a tight finish; with the girls taking control of the ball for the last 15 minutes of the match. Even though Buncrana where missing some key players, it was a good performance by all who took part. If we were to pick out one player to mention, it woulds have to be Joanne Buck; who (while only being introduced to the sport very recently) showed how hard work, determination and putting the effort in at training can give a major return to the team and shows us all what being part of a team is all about! Training, as always, continues on a Wednesday evening at 7.30pm and Friday evening at 8pm. All welcome!
