Dozens of acres of land have been scorched after a serious hillside fire on Muckish.

The fire is believed to have started yesterday morning and spread throughout the day.

The fire smoldered quietly for several hours but did catch blaze in several places.

At this stage it is not known how the fire started.

The fire spread across gorse and shrubbery but has not yet threatened any homes.

“It was fairly bad and it was across a very large area. Thankfully there are no houses nearby.

“Lots of fields have ben completely blackened by the fire,” said one driver who passed by the area.
