One of Donegal’s best-known islanders has called on the Government to follow the recommendations into a report which suggests a reversal of the ban on salmon fishing locally.
A report yesterday suggested the easing of the 2007 ban on driftnet fishing in the area which includes Donegal’s islands.
The report was welcomed by Minister of State Dinny McGinley, Thomas Pringle and Pearse Doherty who were on Arranmore Island for the launch of the report.
Well-known Arranmore islander Gerry Early told Donegaldaily.com that islanders welcomed the fact that politicians had put their parties aside to fight for the people of the islands.
“We certainly would welcome this report and we especially welcome the fact that these politicians have come together and have promised to push it al the way.
“The bottom line is that I and many like me were born islanders but have remained islanders by choice.
“The population of Arranmore has dwindled by 40% in the past 20 years.
Moves like today’s report can protect our future and give us back sustainability.
“I am a proud islander and I want my son and hopefully his sons to grow up and live on the island.
“I do not want to see it become a bird sanctuary,” he said.
