The Alliance competitions came to an end for this season on Saturday last with the playing of the captains prize on the Old Course at Rosapenna.
The conditions were very benign apart from a fresh breeze which favoured the early starters.
The winner by two clear strokes was James Doherty who completed the double for his club as this major was won last season by his club mate Stephen McLaughlin the first time that the captain’s prize has been won in successive years by the members of the same club.
With five strokes gone after the first 5 holes his prospects of winning the premier prize looked over for another year but he rallied well and surprised even himself with his good finish.
In the Gross section Michael McGeady was as he has been all season the clear winner.
He had successive birdies from the 7th to the 9th and as he had dropped a shot at the 3rd he was there fore 2 under for the 9 .He had 2 further birdies and a dropped shot on the back nine to be three under for his round. We all hope that his dominance of the Gross section can now be translated into further success on the challenge tour.
The encouraging thing bout this year was that all competitions arranged were completed unlike the previous year when cancellations due to the unplayable conditions .mind you some of the competitions were only completed this season because of the resilience of the members. On two occasions record high scores won events.
However the Alliance provides good competitive competition for the hardiest of players through the winter months .There is no other competitions during the year that’s sees players both amateur and Professional compete in the same basis in the same event.
The Captain for 2012/13 is Marty McDermott Strabane G.C.The Strabane man will be leading the Alliance in to its 44th Season in this format although it is believed to be one of the oldest in the country having its roots back in the 50’s.
Marty is a long time member of the alliance and also the proud holder of a Category one handicap since his Juvenile days.
In his final speech as Captain Noel Callan remembered Connor Mallon who died recently .Connor was a keen and popular member of the alliance. He also thanked all those who had ventured out on some very inhospitable days and thanked all the Clubs who hosted competitions. In particular he mentioned Rosapenna G.C. Who had hosted the Alliance for the third time this season and he commented on the excellence of the meal served to his guests on the day.
He thanked the Casey family for allowing him to have his Captains day on this most prestigious course
He then assured all present that the Alliance would be in good safe hands with Marty as Captain for 2012/13.
