LETTERKENNY AC’s Brendan Boyce set a new personal best for the 50k today – setting him for Olympic selection.
The Milford man has already made the qualifying time for the 50km walk when he finished in 3.57.58 in Naumburg last September.
But today in Slovakia he even beat that and set a new personal best of 3.57.33 – knocking 25 seconds off his last top finish.
Rival Irish athletes for the Olympic spot suffered in the heat with amie Costin (West Waterford AC), who has returned to competition following a recent rib injury was on track for the Olympic qualification standard at the 25km mark but with temperatures soaring he dropped out at the 32km mark.
While there was heartache again for Colin Griffin (Ballinamore AC), he was also on track for qualification but he was disqualified at the 42k mark.
There’s a lovely feature on Brendan in today’s Yorkshire Evening Post.
