Sinn Féin spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Trade Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD has called on the Irish Government to demand that the Israeli authorities take immediate action to save the life of Palestinian Political Prisoner Hana Shalabi who is danger of “imminent death”.
Speaking today Deputy Mac Lochlainn said: “Today is the 37th Day of Hunger Strike for Hana Shalabi while incarcerated. Her life is at serious risk. The Physicians for Human Rights-Israel have said in a statement that she is in danger of ‘imminent death’. The Israeli Authorities must end their stand off now and immediately transfer her to a hospital with adequate care.
“Hana Shalabi is a political prisoner being held under the Israeli policy of Administrative Detention, the large scale practice of internment without charge or trial. It is a Draconian practice where by orders can be issued for periods of six months with extensions granted with no regards to due process in law. It is an unequivocal abuse of human rights. Imprisonment without trial is wrong and the policy of Administrative Detention needs to be ended immediately.
“I am calling on Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore to pressure Israel to seriously address the underlying reasons behind the growing protests of Palestinian political prisoners. This is crucial as another number of prisoners have also recently commenced hunger strike.
“The Israeli Authorities must release Hana Shalabi immediately.”
