ONE of Europe’s longest-serving civil servants is to retire next month – after an incredible 39 years service.
Ballyshannon native Catherine McLoone began working for the European Parliament in Strasbourg way back in July 1973 after Ireland joined the EU.
She is the longest serving Irish official at the Parliament.
She is pictured here in Strasbourg with local MEP Pat The Cope Gallagher during an emotional last visit to the Parliament for Catherine.
She was accompanied during her visit to Strasbourg by her brother Michael, who served for many years as County Manager of Donegal County Council.
Said MEP Pat: “I sincerely wish Catherine a long and healthy retirement in Donegal and I am extremely proud that the longest serving official from Ireland in the European Parliament is from Donegal.
“Her unbroken service of 39 years working on behalf of Ireland in the European Parliament is unique and is unlikely to be matched.”
So where’s Catherine planning to retire to?
“Donegal of course,” said the MEP.
