Buncrana GAA Notes For Week Ending Sunday 25th March 2012
Friday 16 March, Celtic Park, Derry: Ulster ‘A’ Hurling League, 7 30pm,
Derry v Donegal.
Five proud and capable Buncrana minors put on the Donegal jersey, Sam Doherty, Dónall MacLochlainn, Daniel Wilson, Stephen Nelson and Michael Farrell. Dónall and Daniel were stalwarts in defence especially in an excellent first half. Michael was his usual nippy and skillful self and Stephen was the leading scorer for his county with a tally of 1-01. It is to Sam’s credit, the youngest member of the squad, to have reached intercounty panel status as an U15 player. Conor Grant who was absent due to a school committment is another valued member of the county panel.
Intercounty Hurling: On matters intercounty it is to the Scarvey club’s credit that four different Donegal teams are managed by mentors from Buncrana: Seamus Grant manages the county’s U13’s, Gerry Vaughan the U14’s, Tom Clare the U15’s and John O’Loughlin is joint manager of the U16’s.
Easter Hurling Camp: On Wednesday, April 11 and Thursday, April 12 in Burt from 10 30 am to 2 30 pm an Easter hurling county camp will be held for U14’s, 15’s and 16’s. Top Ulster coaches will put the players through a very high standard of training. It is essential that all players take part. Parents are asked to help with transport. All available mentors and coaches are strongly encouraged to be present.
Foundation Hurling Course: A Foundation Level Coaching Course in Hurling will take place shortly in the Inis Eoghain area. The details will be announced soon.
We wish all our underage players enjoyment and success in the season now starting at primary and secondary school level and in club games. Last year our growing hurling community within the club did very well. Can this year bring such continued success.
County panel for participants with disabilities: Donegal Sports Partnership in conjunction with Ulster/Donegal GAA are establishing a county panel for participants with disabilities. To be eligibleto join the panel individuals must be male 16+, have a mild-moderate intellectual disability and have transport to and from training (probably fortnightly). Training venue will be determined by interest but it is envisaged a host club will be identified in either Letterkenny or Donegal Town. Senior Ladies Gaelic Football: The senior ladies had their second pre-season warm up match in Letterkenny on Tuesday evening. They played a seasoned Letterkenny Institute of Technology side; a side that was in the colleges all Ireland final last year and is currently in the all Ireland semi-final this year again. The match was played under the floodlights at the LYIT campus, and with LYIT on home turf; their experience shone through from the off. But the Buncrana ladies never stopped trying to control as much of the game as they could, and took good control if it at certain stages throughout, with notable performances from Michaela Mullin and Siobhan Mooney. The experienced all Ireland finalists won comprehensively in the end. The Buncrana ladies, with a bit more pre-season training and friendlies, should notch up a good few wins in the forthcoming season!
