ESCAPE LATEST: A Donegal man who killed a Donegal Garda has been arrested in Derry after escaping from jail yesterday.
Martin McDermott was discovered in Derry by the PSNI in Derry this morning.
McDermott, 26, is a career criminal and was serving a 7-year sentence for driving a car at Gda McLoughlin.
The brave Buncrana-based Garda, originally from Leitrim, later died from his injuries.
There is a huge uproar today from colleagues and friends – with some calling for the Minister for Justice Alan Shatter to explain to Dail Eireann how a man who killed a Garda and had 91 previous convictions was being held at Loughan Open Prison in Blacklion.
McDermott, who was allowed to leave the prison to attend a work programme, failed to report back for an evening roll call.
One colleague contacted donegaldaily.com and was “absolutely livid”.
“I was angry when I heard he had escaped, but I almost threw up when I heard he was in Loughan House. That’s supposed to be for low-risk prisoners and Martin McDermott is not a low risk prisoner,” said the serving Garda.
“The whole country knows about this thug. He has previous convictions across a range of offences – more than 90 of them – and none worse that killing a guard.
“As far as I am concerned, his move to an open prison was an insult to Gary and and insult to his family, friends and colleagues.”
Gardai and PSNI officers in Derry and Tyrone were issued with McDermott’s picture and description.
Donegaldaily.com broke the story locally last night of McDermott’s escape.
