Three Donegal schools have been ear-marked for major development under the five year Building Programme.

The announcement comes just weeks after major developments were announced on three other schools in the county including Colaiste Ailaigh, Letterkenny, St Patricks NS, Lurgybrack and Gaelscoil Adhamanain, Letterkenny.

The three schools on yesterday’s announcement include Deele College, Raphoe, Educate Together, Letterkenny and the Little Angels, Letterkenny.

Senator Jimmy Harte has welcomed the news that six Donegal schools will be included in the 5 year Building Programme

” This is a major announcement that will see over €1.5Bn spent in this five-year period on school buildings. It reflects the Programme for Government commitment to prioritise school building projects in a revised national development plan and to bring about greater transparency.

“This major schools capital investment in the 5 Year Plan will provide approximately 15,000 direct and 3,000 indirect jobs over the period of the programme (an annual average of 3,600 jobs).”

This is particularily good news for Donegal and it shows the committment to the area

There are 275 major projects. Of these, there are: * 106 new schools and 65 extensions at primary leve, * 43 new schools and 49 extensions at second level * 8 new special schools and extensions at 4 further special schools.

There are a further 60 schools under construction at present, most of which will be completed during 2012. As these do not form part of the five-year plan, they are not included in these details, but for your convenience, are also attached separately.

This investment will result in over 11% of the total school population benefiting from new permanent places delivered during the period 2012 to 2016.

This follows on from announcements in recent weeks detailing ?35 million to be spent replacing prefabs in 200 schools this year, as well as the patronage of the 20 new primary schools that will be created over the next few years

Over €2 billion has been earmarked toward school capital investments over the next five years, of which €1.5 billion is being allocated towards the funding of major school projects, which is today’s announcement.
