The MP for Strangford Jim Shannon complained to the House of Commons in London that too many people suspected of IRA attacks in the past had never been brought to justice.
He said that Mr McMonagle was behind the 1982 murder of Huge Lexi Cummings, from Artigarvan near Strabane in Co Tyrone.
Mr Cummings who was shot dead by the IRA.
Mr Shannon said he wanted to know why William Gerard McMonagle didn’t stand trial. But Mr McMonagle was cleared.
He told the Commons: “There are too many questions which the family deserve an answer to.
“They turn on the news and they see the Mayor of Letterkenny Gerry McMonagle, having ran from justice in Northern Ireland, having been proven to having been there will gun powder residue on him, embracing his freedom and position in life.
“The family visit the grave of a true gentleman Lexi Cummings with questions in their mind and grief in their hearts.
“Who can answer these questions and give the family closure.”
Mayor McMonagle said he was studying the comments. He was tried for the killing but was cleared.
Sinn Fein sources say he is ‘livid’ with the claims which he was said were ‘lies.’
“He (Shannon) wouldn’t say this outside parliament because he knows he would be sued,” said one source.
