Shay Given has revealed he received an angry four page letter after he commented on players born in Northern Ireland declaring for the Republic.
The Lifford man was responding to questions about the arrival of Derry-born player James McClean into the Irish squad.
Given even revealed he could have played for Northern Ireland.
“My mum is from Northern Ireland and I could have played for either.
“I have to be careful answering that question as the last time I did, I got a four page letter from someone in the North.
“It’s the player’s decision either way,” he said.
Shay revealed he has never even met Sunderland star McClean but it looking forward to doing just that when the 22 year old joins the Republic squad for the upcoming friendly against the Czech Republic.
“I’ve never met him before and I’m looking forward to seeing him and how good he is.
“He seems very powerful and direct. He has a great shot and is on the crest of a wave. I hope people give him time,” said Shay.
