The Donegal ‘Can’t Pay! Won’t Pay!’ campaign says figures released by government show that the campaign of non registration for the household charge and septic tank charge is capturing the hearts and minds of the people.
“We have found a massive anger to these stealth taxes all across the county at the meetings we have held.
“Our message is simple: Don’t register, don’t pay, and as the governments own figures show this message is sticking with people” said spokesman Micheal Mac Giolla Easbuig said.
As the government finalises plans to deliver a booklet explaining the household charge this week to the 1.85m homes that are liable, Mr Mac Giolla Easbuig explained the national and local campaign is responding by producing its own leaflet which will be delivered to as many homes as possible over the coming weeks.
“The campaign is up and running in all counties across the state, we have produced half a million leaflets and tens of thousands of copies of a county newsletter which will dismiss the propaganda and lies that the governments booklet contains around the funding of local services” he continued.
“We all know the money is going to pay off the gambling debts of bankers, bondholders and dodgy developers. Not one penny of this tax will improve local roads, libraries, water or housing. Not one penny will stay in this state.”
The coming weeks will see a massive increase in activity from the campaign Mac Giolla Easbuig claims.
“We have information stalls planned for the major towns around the county, the printing of our second county newsletter and in response to what we have been hearing at our meetings we are having a protest rally on March 24th at 3pm at the Market Square Letterkenny. The governments tactics of fear and misinformation have been met head on this time, we have told the people the truth and we have the government on the ropes.”
The campaign has meetings organised in Ballintra, Buncrana, Rathmullan, Fanavolty, Kerrykeel, St. Johnston, Manorhamilton over the next fortnight and Mr Mac Giolla Easbuig says the momentum continues to build.
“Every time we hold a meeting people come up to us at the end asking can we help them organise in their area so it is clear that opposition to the governments plans for unfair taxes is growing. If people want to get in contact and involved they can also call the campaign LoCall hotline number on 1890 98 98 00.”
