AS awkward TV moments go, this one took some beating.
Kevin Cassidy, double All-Star winner and some-time commentator/pundit for TG4 was standing on O’Donnell Park as a telly colleague starts interviewing Jim McGuinness.
What – enquired the TG4 reporter – about Cassidy? Would be be returning to the fold? The Gaoth Dobhair man was three feet away, head looking down to the ground, feet shifting from side to side.
It was difficult to work out who was more embarrassed – McGuinness or Cassidy.
“Kevin made his decision and that’s it. That was 2011 and this is 2012,” McGuinness said.
“We have to move on now. He made his comments on Friday night and they are what they are. From my point of view we have dealt with the issue.”
McGuinness was responding to Cassidy’s declaration on Friday that he had retired from inter-county football.
Today at O’Donnell Park Donegal were seriously missing other star performers who are still in the fold.
“We’re very disappointed with the performance and our energy levels,” McGuinness said afterwards.
“We missed Michael (Murphy) and Colm (McFadden) a lot in the full-forward line. There’s a lot of work but at least they showed a lot of heart to try and get back into it.
“Laois are a physically strong team and they put a lot of emphasis on that, while our three biggest players are Michael, Colm and Christy Toye and when you take them out of your team then it has an impact.”
