Donegal Vocational Schools shrugged off a quiet start to claim the Ulster Voctional Schools Title at Errigal Ciaran in Tyrone today.
Despite Cavan VS going ahead by 1-3 to no score after just five minutes, Donegal made a spirited comeback to eventually canter home by 3-8 to 1-6.
Solid performances from the likes of Brendan Doherty, Paddy McBrearty and Cathal McGettigan inspired Donegal.
Cavan decided to put no less than three players on rising star Paddy McBrearty leaving Donegal space to work in the middle of the park.
Manager Joe McKelvey said he was very pleased with the overall performance and especially how the team came back from an early Cavan onslaught.
“The lads dug deep and that’s what impressed me most. We went behind very early on and yet they didn’t panic.
“The half back line pushed on well to support midfield and that’s where we came out on top. I’m very pleased with the lads,” said McKelvey.
The only downside of the day was the loss of Conor Greene with a knee injury.
It is now doubtful if the Dungloe man will be available for Saturday week’s semi-final with Cork – a repeat of last year’s All Ireland Final.
“Conor was a big loss but we have a strong panel. Hopefully he will be back and Ryan McHugh should also be back so we should be ready for the challenge that Cork will present,” added McKelvey.
