And they aren’t just locals – one couple has travelled all the way from Co Carlow.
Claire McNeill and husband Michael are at Malin Head promising to stay “for the long haul” with their three children.
It’s the best chance to see the lights since October 2003.
“We are here for the night,” said Claire on her Facebook page.
“We have a DS, books, lap top, duvets, pillows, sweets, crisps, reading lights, colouring books, the whole lot, we are in the the long haul,” she said.
It’s cloudy over Malin Head but more clear over Fanad, according to donegaldaily.com readers.
And it has started to clear over Lough Foyle.
Latest satellite predictions say clouds is slowly clearing and could lead to spectacular displays of the northern lights.
John Maines, from Ohio, was touring Ireland when he heard about the displays.
“I just had to get to Donegal to see it and I’m hoping I will do so over the next couple of nights,” he told us.
“The people have been amazing, so welcoming. There’s been a lot of good fun – or craic as you call it – in Malin Head tonight.”
It looks like the Northern Lights are doing more for Donegal tourism than anything done by Failte Ireland.
Our interviews with the Buncrana Camera Club about their incredible pictures are going global.
And tonight ABC News in America are even covering the story. See the link below:
