ARRANMORE ISLANDERS SEE THE LIGHT ONCE MORE!

More than 200 homes on Arranmore Island, which had been plunged into darkness overnight, have now had their power restored.

The island, which has a population of more than 500 people and is 5kms off the Donegal mainland, lost power around 9pm last night.

Islanders were forced to rush for candles and start up generators overnight before the power returned just before midday today.

The only electricity working on the island was from the lighthouse.

Island spokesman Jerry Earley said the power-cut had little impact on the population.

“Islanders have been through a lot worse than this. It was nice just to sit around the fire and talk for a change.

“It was good to have the power back so that people could back about their everyday business,” he said.
