While Rangers drew 1-1 against Aberdeen, Neil Lennon’s men were making hard work against the Paisley side.
But Forrest’s low controlled shot after 70 minutes and Scott Brown’s curler 17 minutes later won it for Celtic to stretch their lead at the top of the SPL to four points.
It’s Celtic 12th league win in a row and represents another massive turn of fortunes for the Hoops.
It was a tricky fixture against a side which beat Rangers here on Christmas Eve and at the end of a game in which St Mirren’s attempts at scoring were double that of Celtic’s, it once again said a lot for the Hoops defence and keeper Fraser Forster who pulled off a few fine saves.
“It was important to keep the run going, we’ve had a great couple of months,” said Forster afterwards who singled out man of the match Forrest for his special goal.
“We’ve got great quality in those areas. James’ has scored another cracker,” he added.
“We’ve got a solid and consistent back four and we just need to keep that going. Once we got that goal we knew that we could keep a clean sheet.
“We knew it would be a hard game. The most important thing was to get three points today,” said the keeper.
Rangers’ draw however made a special day for Lennon.
And the Hoops boss admitted it had been far from easy against Danny Lennon’s side.
He said: “I’m ecstatic with the win, that game was probably our most difficult of this run.
“The conditions have made it difficult, it’s been a really tough day. The wind was strong, it was swirling around the stadium and it was wet.
“You need your keeper to do well particularly away from home.”
Meanwhile one of Rangers’ best player Nikica Jelavic is moving to West Ham.
