The President of the Letterkenny Institute of Technology has said the college must adapt if it is to offer the courses which will provide students with employment in the years ahead.
Mr Hannigan was speaking as the LYIT offered its biggest ever choice in the areas of science, technology and software development.
He said the outlook is very positive.
“The market is changing and we’re conscious that our courses must meet the needs of industry. That’s why we’re listening to the needs of the market and striving to deliver programmes which equip our students with the knowledge and skills to help them succeed.”
Students are now being asked to visit lyit.ie prior to the CAO deadline of 1 February 2012 for course options or call Noeleen on 074 9186108.
In 2011, Letterkenny IT was named runner up in the Sunday Times survey and celebrates 40 years in delivering education.
The college now offers over 70 courses across its 4 schools of Science, Business, Engineering and Tourism, many up to Masters level. It has seen a steady increase in student numbers which now exceed 3,000, a 30% increase since 2008, and is located on two modern campuses at Letterkenny and Killybegs.
LYIT campuses have excellent facilities including state of the art science labs, new cookery demonstration kitchen, gym and floodlit playing fields. A friendly supportive atmosphere is backed by great relationships with staff and students, a point that’s often referred to by graduates.
LYIT has always been a strong advocate of encouraging mature students participation within the regular curriculum.
Since early 2009 the college has been successful in a number of proposals for the delivery of courses which are aimed at helping those who are unemployed and who wish to retrain or gain a new qualification.
It has successfully introduced programmes in Wind Energy, Financial Services Technologies, Pharmacy Technician and Accounting. In January 2012, LYIT will be making an application to deliver a further new set of Labour Market Activation Programmes.
LYIT provides an exciting environment which encourages strong academic learning and great practical experience in areas which are growing and employers are looking for. To find out more about studying at LYIT visit www.lyit.ie or call 074 9186108.
