LETTERKENNY General Hospital’s Emergency Department has never been overcrowded, junior Minister Kathleen Lynch told the Dail today.
Padraig MacLochlainn TD said the hospital was “in crisis” over the Christmas period and expressed his great surprise that the HSE believed it has operated “satisfactorily.”
Ms Lynch said the new Emergency Department will be opened in June or July, as donegaldaily.com reported last week.
Deputy MacLochlainn said the minister should speak to the unions at the hospital about the issue and asked for the figures given to her by the HSE to be released.
It will also come as a surprise to the various members of staff who have contacted donegaldaily.com in recent weeks.
At one stage more than 50 people were waiting for treatment on one evening – with patients on trolleys and wheelchairs.
Speaking to Donegaldaily after hearing the news that the new wing will be open in June or July, a cautious Deputy MacLochlainn said he welcomed the news.
“I am delighted the Minister appears to be giving a commitment but I would still have certain reservations.
“I certainly don’t think we are over the line with it just yet,” he said.
