The first sighting came from John Joe McFadden, a regular at the Foreland Heights pub.
This was later confirmed by Garda Chris Massey and Garda Beth Lehem.
However there are also unconfirmed sightings near Kerrykeel, Culdaff, Burtonport, and Dunkineely.
“We had similar sightings last year,” said Garda Massey.
“There was one fella who claimed to have seen Santa near Fanad but he was definitely here first.
“We got a tip-off from a reliable source on Tory Island that he was headed for Gaoth Dobhair first. I don’t think he goes anywhere near Fanad until he’s done Letterkenny.
“We have interviewed Mr McFadden extensively in the past hour and we believe his statement is completely reliable.”
Dr Joseph Mary, Professor of Yuletide at LYIY – a regular expert for donegaldaily.com – said he had been monitoring developments since darkness fell on his specially-adapted AppleMac computer.
“The software started going haywire around 8pm with serious skybound activity involving a man in a red coat and at least eight reindeers,” he said.
“I’m going to continue to monitor things overnight. I’m on double time so I might as well.”
